Photo of the Day: Volcanic Lightning

This photo from National Geographic shows the Eyjafjallajökull volcano’s ash plume, which roiled air travel in the spring of 2010. The lightening called a “dirty thunderstorm” occurs when rock and ice particles loosed by exploding magma collide in the atmosphere.Lightning Strike NY Harbor. This shot was captured during a major electrical storm. There was little wind and no rain which allowed me to stay safely inside and shoot from an open window. This was the 82nd exposure out of 150 made that night. The camera was mounted on a tripod, exposures made with a cable release for 5 seconds at f10. Except for a some minor level adjustments and a square crop this was what came out of the camera.

Amateur photographer captures the electrifying moment lightning strikes his neighbour's boat

This electrifying photograph taken by an amateur photographer shows the exact moment a bolt of lightning tore through the night sky and struck his neighbour's boat.
Francis Evans, 63, was watching TV in bed when a storm struck and he decided to try and capture a picture of lightning from his bedroom window.
Mr Evans, a grandfather who lives in Malpas, near Truro in Cornwall, described the shot of lightning striking the mast of the 18ft boat as 'quite lucky'.

The retired chief biomedical scientist, whose home overlooks the Tresillian River, said he took the opportunity to get some shots as he heard the storm approach around midnight on July 1.
'When it got louder and closer I became aware of the flashes,' he said. 'I thought, well I'll set up my camera and have a go. Of course, I didn't know when the flash would come.'

Breath-taking images of the world’s most brutal storms captured by fearless photographer, 31, who gets so close he gets knocked over by the shockwave

Mr Korosec said: 'Because storms are dynamic you never get two that are the same.
'You're always learning and improving your knowledge and you being to understand and respect the severity of the storms.
'I'm interested in forecasting storms and its phenomena like tornadoes, hail and lightning.

Cloud-to-ground lightning bolts are a common phenomenon—about 100 strike Earth’s surface every single second—yet their power is extraordinary. Each bolt can contain up to one billion volts of electricity.
This enormous electrical discharge is caused by an imbalance between positive and negative charges. During a storm, colliding particles of rain, ice, or snow increase this imbalance and often negatively charge the lower reaches of storm clouds. Objects on the ground, like steeples, trees, and the Earth itself, become positively charged—creating an imbalance that nature seeks to remedy by passing current between the two charges.
A step-like series of negative charges, called a stepped leader, works its way incrementally downward from the bottom of a storm cloud toward the Earth. Each of these segments is about 150 feet (46 meters) long. When the lowermost step comes within 150 feet (46 meters)
