Cloud-to-ground lightning bolts are a common phenomenon—about 100 strike Earth’s surface every single second—yet their power is extraordinary. Each bolt can contain up to one billion volts of electricity.
This enormous electrical discharge is caused by an imbalance between positive and negative charges. During a storm, colliding particles of rain, ice, or snow increase this imbalance and often negatively charge the lower reaches of storm clouds. Objects on the ground, like steeples, trees, and the Earth itself, become positively charged—creating an imbalance that nature seeks to remedy by passing current between the two charges.
A step-like series of negative charges, called a stepped leader, works its way incrementally downward from the bottom of a storm cloud toward the Earth. Each of these segments is about 150 feet (46 meters) long. When the lowermost step comes within 150 feet (46 meters)

Tall towers are frequent targets of lightning strikes, because there is less air to act as an insulator between the tower and a cloud.  In this case, it is the Hillbrow Telkom Tower in Johannesburg, South Africa.Photo: Lightning illuminating a city skyline

Lightning Photo Tips

Lightning Image 20120525220Lightning Photo Tips

I used a Nikon print film 35mm SLR camera from the late 1980s then made the move to digital with a Nikon D70 digital SLR camera in June 2004, and have since upgraded to a Nikon D90 DSLR. I use ISO 200 for almost all lightning photos. The D70 came with an 18-70mm kit lens, however I mostly used an old manual focus 50mm lens for lightning as it has aperture to F1.8 and precise infinity focusing. I currently use a 18-200mm VR lens on the D90 and a F1.4 50mm lens.Lightning Image 20120521154
Despite lightning itself being very bright, the more overall scene light you let in, the better the picture (in most cases), so use lower F settings at night. Zooming in on distant lightning often produces disappointing results.
